लक्ष्मी नरसिंह मंदीर, हंपी (Lakshmi-Narashimha Temple, Hampi)

16th century monolithic sculpture of Narasimha-Lakshi at Hampi, Karnataka, India. The sculpture has seen some damage and the statue of Lakshi is missing (broken). But the hand of Lakshmi can be clearly see at the left hand of Narasimha. Laxi sat on the left lap. The roof of the temple has collapsed as well.

Mercury Transit of 2019

Transit of Mercury is an astronomical event when the planet Mercury appears to be traveling across the disc of the Sun. This event is quite rare and may happen about 13-14 times in a century.

Below is picture taken by me during of the transit of Mercury on November 11, 2019.

Rattlesnakes Mating

I recently spotted two rattlesnakes, basking in the morning Sun, mating.

Orangutans of Borneo

A young female Orangutan, Sandakan, Borneo.

Orangutan means 'person of the forest' in the local (Malaya/Indonesian) language(s). When you observe them for a while, you know why they must be called that. The above picture is taken in the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre of Sandakan in Borneo.

Borneo is the third largest island on the planet. It also has one of oldest tropical rain-forest on the planet.

Palm oil fruit.

Orangutan's are critically endangered. Mainly due to the loss of habitat. Local farmers are cutting down the rain-forest to harvest the cash crop of oil palm. Local people also burn the forest to make the clearings easy. Which sometimes causes massive wildfires not only destroying habitat, but also killing various species of animals.

Similar to plastics, palm oil was discovered at the right(?) time for the voracious global consumption needs. It is a cheap and versatile product that is used in multitude of things. Its consumption is increasing rapidly.¹ Palm oil is also used as a bio-fuel. The US policy of using renewal fuels ultimately resulted in using cheap palm oil in huge quantities². A reminder that the first step in conservation should be 'reduce'. The consumption of palm oil is expected to keep increasing around the globe in the coming decades. For the poor countries like Malaysia and Indonesia it is an effective product to bring the masses out of abject poverty.

Aerial views of Borneo.

Humans have probably lived here for 40,000 to 50,000 years, but the scale of destruction on the island is unprecedented. If you fly over the island the signs of deforestation are quite obvious.

New species are still being discovered in Borneo. And quite likely, some species are being wiped out by humans even before they are discovered.



Wandering in Borneo's rain-forests is a unique experience. Global awareness and active conservation efforts are perhaps the only ways to save this sanctuary.

Wildlife-Borneo

Crimson Sunbird, Borneo. (May 2019)

The Whirlpool Galaxy- M51

M51 - Whirlpool Galaxy. Single shot- 3 min exposure.

The image shows two galaxies merging with each other. M51 is about 23 Million light years away.

Orion-Wide Field

Here is another shot of the Orion Nebula.

This time, the camera is a little more from this era, which allows higher ISOs and also better sensor quality. Thin clouds and hazy yet better performance than the Rebel XSi.

Orion Constellation-Wide Field

This is a wide-field picture of the Orion Constellation showing the belt of Orion, Rigel, Saiph and the Orion Nebula in the middle.

अनुसूयेचं #MeToo, ब्रह्मा विष्णू महेश संकटात

चित्रकुटचे जंगल: आताच हाती आलेल्या बातमीनुसार 'मीटू'  चळवळीच्या लाटेत संकटात सापडलेल्यांमध्ये ब्रह्मा विष्णू आणि महेश यांचीही भरती झालेली आहे.  पतिव्रता अनुसूया यांनी या तिघांवर परिस्थितीचा गैरफायदा घेऊन विनयभंग केल्याचा आरोप केला आहे. पतीच्या व्रतात अडकल्याचा फायदा घेऊन या तिघांनी आपल्याला नग्न होण्यास भाग पाडले असे त्यांचे म्हणणे आहे.

आकाशवाणीचे वार्ताहर नारदमुनी कळलावे यांनी घेतलेल्या खास मुलाखतीत त्यांनी वरील आरोप केला आहे. सध्या मानवलोकात उलथापालथ घडवलेल्या मीटू चळवळीच्या पार्श्वभुमीवर नारदमुनी यांचा देवलोकात चाललेल्या गैरप्रकारावर 'देवलोकातल्या भानगडी' नामक exposé आकाशवाणीच्या 'समुद्रमंथन'  या विशेषांकात प्रसिद्ध झाला आहे.

आमच्या वार्ताहराने या तिघांनाही या बातमीवर प्रतिक्रीया देण्यास संपर्क करायचा कसोशीने प्रयत्न केला पण संपर्क होऊ शकला नाही. केवळ निर्मळ श्रद्धा असलेल्यांचाच संपर्क होऊ शकतो असे तिघांच्या जनसंपर्क कार्यालयाकडून आम्हांस कळवण्यात आले. (तिघांचे जनसंपर्क कार्यालय एकच आहे आणि संपर्क करण्यास लागणारी पात्रताही एकच आहे हे आमच्या वार्ताहराने विशेष नमूद केले.)

जनसंपर्क कार्यालयाकडून जाहीर केलेल्या पत्रकात दिलेल्या निवेदनाप्रमाणे, देवलोकात घडणार्‍या दैवी लीला प्रकारच्या कामात असल्या भानगडी देवलोकांना कराव्या लागतातच. त्यात त्यांचा कोणताही विपरीत हेतू नव्हता. अर्थात पुर्वीच्या दैवी लीलांचा प्रकार तसलाच होता आणि अशा गोष्टी आता आमच्याकडून चुकूनही होणार नाही अशी खात्री तिघांनीही दिली आहे.

सरस्वतीदेवींनी, या तिघांच्या बायकांना अनुसुयेची असुया होती. म्हणूनच या तिघींनी पतिव्रता चाचणी यांसारखी थेरं करण्यास या तिघांना भाग पाडले असा टोला लगावला आहे. आधुनिक शिक्षण आणि मुल्यं या तिघींनीही आतातरी अनुसरावीत असे सरस्वतीदेवींचे म्हणणे आहे.

तिकडे इंद्राच्या दरबारातून मात्र विपरीतच सूर ऐकू आले. रंभा आणि उर्वशी यांनी हे जरा अतीच होत आहे असे म्हणत नाराजी दाखवली. "नग्नतेचा इतका बाऊ का करावा हे कळत नाही. इथे इंद्राच्या दरबारात फ्रेंच सुद्धा लाजतील एव्हढी नग्नता आम्ही दिवस अन रात्र करीत असतो!"

देवलोकातील सोशलमाध्यम 'ऐरावत' यावर तात्काळ रंभा आणि उर्वशी यांवर टिकेची झोड उठली. ऐरावत वरील काही देवीद्वेष्ट्या लोकांनी अनुसूयेला तक्रार करायला इतका वेळ का लागावा असे म्हणत या आरोपावर शंका व्यक्त केली आहे. इतर ऐरावतकरांनी तात्काळ "ब्रह्मदेवाचा काटा सेकंदानं पण पुढे सरकला नसेल!" याची आठवण करून देऊन त्यांची तोंडं गप्प केली आहेत.

नारदमुनींच्या exposé मध्ये अजून कोणाकोणाचे पीतळ उघडे पडते याकडे राक्षसवर्गाचे लक्ष लागून राहीले आहे.

Belt of Orion- V-1.0

This is a test picture of the Orion Constellation's 'Belt'.

Equipment:-
1. A Alt-Az mount- Celestron 5 SE
2. Canon Rebel XSi (450D) with 300 mm zoom lens. (@ f 5.6) with LPF-2 filter removed.


Data:-
4 Light Frames @ ISO1600. Shutter speed 90s.
2 Dark Frames @ ISO1600. Shutter speed 60s. 


The center of focus was Alnilam. But with some aggressive image processing, I could make flame nebula clearly visible. Also, a hint of Horsehead. This makes me optimistic about trying for the flame and horsehead as primary objects.

Clearly, I need more light frames, long and short exposures. Also, the noise can be reduced using dark frames of appropriate exposure times.

Overall, not a bad effort for a very cheap setup and short processing time.
